On the road of the Corniche des Cévennes 4.5 km from St Jean du Gard , 18km from Anduze, 30 km from Alès, 60 km de Nîmes, 80 km from the Mediterranean.
Nestled in a tranquil and secluded setting, the house is just 4.5 km from the amenities of the picturesque village of St Jean du Gard, at the crossroads of Provence and the natural State Park of the Cévennes. St Jean du Gard is also well known as Robert L. Stevenson's final destination of his famous "Travel With a Donkey in the Cevennes".
The house originally belonged to the family of a famous French protestant leader, Abraham Mazel , who fought for religious freedom in France. For the Huguenots the surrounding wilderness was a hiding place from king Louis XIV's soldiers.
The house is bordered by a vast garden and sits on top of the hill of Falguières, (thus its name, Les Hauts de Falguières) overlooking the wild valley of the Gardon on one side and a pine and chestnut forests on the other side.
Cherry, olive and fig trees, eucalyptus as well as lavender, a tiny vineyard and mimosas grace the landscape.
The Mediterranean sea is only 80 km far, an easy trip for a day on the coast.
St Jean du Gard has an excellent range of shops (including art shops) and gourmet restaurants. Each Tuesday, the town hosts one of the best farmers' markets in the area. Specialty markets, fairs and other events are held throughout the year. Also visit Anduze and its highly appreciated touristy attractions.
You are sure to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this retreat after exploring the many sights of the region. Relax under the shadow of the beautiful old lime tree, or in the softly lit and heated pool. If you prefer, you can choose to escape to the nearby river of the Gardon for a wilder bath.
